dj Spery meets.... Shantel !!

"I visited Planet Paprika for a while.. I had to meet the Disko Boy..
We talked about some Disko Partizani situations and then i figured out
that the Kiez is alright...
Ladies and Gentlemen,  i present you, Mr. Stefan Hantel (aka SHANTEL)! "

-Hello, Stefan! It’s Christmas time and 2012 is almost gone..
Where are you at the moment and what are you planning to do the last week of this year?

Ciao from Berlin! Well, i don't really celebrate anything. I did my last live concert 20.12. in Vienna, which was really great! Now I am still touring, almost every night, as a solo DJ all around Europe until 01.01.13. For new year  I will do a big party in downtown Istanbul...

-Recently, you released a new single and video “The Kiez is alright”. New music style, new sounds, new rhythms. Why did you choose to “leave” from the Balkan genre?

I truly believe in songwriting! I wrote the "kiez" in Berlin, while some cars where burning in the streets of Frankfurt in main, where the European central bank held its headquarters. It was something like a year ago and the city got shocked by some local riots against daily bank policy...I think every idea, emotions and of 'course a strong song needs his individual voice to express the maximum out of it. i felt the "kiez" like that. Pure & simple!  I wasn't even thinking about a genre, sound or something. I love music in general and still use a very pluralistic point of view when I am in the studio. I started the 2012 live tour with my band in early April, since these days we play the "kiez is alright" every night live on stage long side with disko partizani and my other hits and the kids really love it, so do i...

-You are known as “The king of the Balkans”, “The Disko Partizani guy” or “The Balkan Miracle”! How do you feel about all these? Did you expect that the “Disko Partizani” record would be so successful?

You know, i don't really change. It's always something from the outside, people start to treat you different. The hotels get better and the cars get bigger. i don't really give a damn' about it. When i can, i prefer do walk and i still love staying somewhere in friends private flats and eat the dishes of the family. The funny thing is, that disko partizani wasn't an instant hit at all. I clearly remember that in the beginning i received a lot of bullshit from the outside...i think the song found its legacy by itself and of course it went around the world, i was deeply impressed when i played a few month ago in mexico city and saw the 20.000 kids where screaming: "disko, disko partizani" these are the positive side effects about globalization, i think!

-When did you start playing music and when you decided to follow the music of the Balkans?

Well, music was always a good reason to waste my time. I wasn't really hysteric going to school or university. I felt always the power that music is able to create. Anyhow at a certain point things got speedy and i found myself being part of this surrealistic jet-set party thing, in the beginning it felt like a joke, but these days i really think it’s a fantastic opportunity to communicate and to exchange with a worldwide community of all different kinds of people, their culture and live-styles. I love it. It’s much deeper than any kind of university or school.
Even though, one of the biggest misunderstandings is maybe all this story about Balkan etc. I think the club culture phenomena, let's name it as "Balkan pop" is a truly Diaspora 'thing! It started and happens in the Diaspora. In places like Frankfurt, Vienna or Berlin, local kids, dj's and producers with and without a cultural background founded something virtual new. I am sure, not my Romanian grandmother, or my Greek grandfather, is making me a better musician. "Balkan pop" was never representing or reflecting the Balkans as a geographical region. We just used it as an idea of a new flavor, of a different sound and attitude, hedonism & fun. Suddenly it turns into a kind of new continental European music hybrid, which is of course quite unique.. but as i mentioned i feel a really big gap between the approach of some local DJ's in Berlin, Barcelona and Bologna and the geographical and political reality that we declare as the Balkans. Over the years i experienced so many different places in the south-east and for sure, the audience, the concerts where just mind blowing, but cultural wise it’s like discovering the desert. The so called Eastern Europe is turning into a kind of dark side of the moon. It’s the uprising nationalism, chauvinism, corruption, racism and anti-semitism ideas from the past and being not a part of a liberal and pluralistic, democratic vision anymore. I don't know but I am really shocked about the daily politics in Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia...etc.

-Many of your tracks are based on Jewish melodies. You have also released the “Kosher Nostra” record which includes Yiddish songs and ballads. What is your connection with this culture?

I don't care about being Jewish, gypsy and gay and purple or yellow and black. I mean I am coming from a Jewish family but i don't give a shit. I don't believe in God or religion but i respect all and everybody as long as they respect me too.
As a curator of the family of human beings, i love to research in all kind of directions. The kosher nostra project is mainly the story about immigration & assimilation and not so much about the Jews. I mean some of these characters became famous gangsters not 'cause they where Jews, it’s because they were simply human beings.

-As a musician, why do you think that there is so much interest in Balkan Gypsy music and brass bands?

I don't think there is a big interest? It’s not in the (North -Western ) radio, it’s not in the TV. We can easily say, that the mass-media didn't notice anything and this is again another part of the European paradox. It’s easier to catch up with an Anglo-American country song instead of a cheesy Greek pop song in the western European media platforms. Maybe the romantic idea of brass bands and the mystic smell of the Balkans are just exotic element that some people need to dream on. I think it’s quite reasonable that everybody needs at a certain injection to feel this lovely breeze of anarchy & romance, even if it’s just a blueprint of something not really existing anymore...

-When you are having a DJ set, do you play only Balkan music? Is it better to mix other kinds of music, too or it’s easy to lose your musical “identity”, in this way?

My music has no passport or ID card! It’s only about emotions and expressions, if we give a sound to a certain nation I am OFF! DJ's should be there to entertain, doesn't matter with what and how. Of course everybody needs the key, a kick, needs a language of how to perform, as long as the people trust into the performance, you can do what you want. I personally love the freestyle and the pluralistic sound, Rock' n’ roll, partysani! It should be sexy, hot and raunchy, that’s what the people love me for...and of course a real Greek wedding underneath!

-A few months ago, you wrote on your Facebook page that your tour in USA was cancelled because the U.S. embassy didn’t give you a visa. Why this happened?

I really don't know? Maybe cause i mentioned in a big German TV interview, Obama should close down Guantanamo, or maybe they did not like my shirt, who knows.. Instead of the U.S. i spend fantastic days in Canada.

-Which are your plans for 2013? Could we wait for a concert or a DJ set of yours, in Greece?

I'll be back in Greece:
07.02 to 09.02 , Patras, Thessaloniki und Athens.
See you then, my lovely “malakas”!

-If you had only one day to perform live with your band “The Bucovina Club Orkestar”, where would it be, which track would you definitely play and who would you invite as a special guest?

I would love to play naked in Teheran - Iran, in front of some Taliban, doing striptease to them bringing girls, woman with big breasts and play them some pornographic movies, while singing my new song "fucking feels better than praying"!

-Thank you very much, dear Shantel and happy new year full of music!

Dj Spery meets.... dj Click !

"It's a really big pleasure to present you monsieur Click, this week!
He is one of the first persons who believed in me and my music, he is
a very nice guy and above all, he has a special gift: he combines his perfect
DJ skills with extraordinary blends of music and talented musicians. I wish
him to keep on "traveling" us to this modern-traditional  music trip forever! "

-Bonjour, monsieur Click! You have just released your new record,
“Jaipur”. Give us some details about it.

I have been exploring the music of the Balkans for many years now. These journeys led me to India, to the very roots of the Roma culture, with my mobile studio in the heart of the Pink City. I steeped myself in traditional Rajasthani chants, passed down from father to son since the dawn of time. I digitized and carried on the art of the ancient music of Lord Rama, doing so in collaboration with Parveen Khan, Amrat Hussain, Sanjay Khan (Dhoad family), Valentina Casula, and Mohamed Bundu, to bring happiness and peace.

-Your Live Band consists of an Italian vocalist (Valentina Casula), two Romanian Gypsies in violin, saxophone and flutes (Serioja Mihai-Tudorel Mihai) and one Indian vocalist and tabla player (Amrat Hussain). What’s the purpose of this team?

For 2013 I introduced a Flamenco singer / dancer to loop the gypsy culture Karine Gonzalez, the timbre of Valentina Casula’s vibrant voice is the multilingual Ariadne’s thread guiding the rhythmic vessel through the labyrinth of Indian, Serb, Romanian, Neapolitan, and Andalusian landscapes.
The Balkan violin virtuoso Serioja Mihai, pairing with the tabla of India prodigy Amrat Hussain. It's a gypsy meeting like an exhilarating « Latcho Drom », steeping entire chapters of Far Eastern heritage in electronic ecstasy.

- From the beginning till now, which music styles have you experienced and which one suits you, the most?

My surname is Dj 4X4, I'm from the world zone, I produce many type of sounds Worldtronica, Digital Folk, Gypsy Music, Future Mediterranean, Electro jazz, New Flamenco, Brasileiro Remixes, Electro Gypsy, Gnawi Rhythms, BalkanBeats, Electro Folk from South Korea.. which one suits me the most... it's too hard to choose.

-Vinyl, CD, MP3. What do you prefer and why?

Tape of 90 mines ;-) (laughs!)

-You are also known as the “Globetrotter”! You travel a lot.. Do you think that is necessary so to be inspired for new productions?

Yes specially for what I do, music with authentic musicians, it's much better to record them “en casa” with family around, party, food..get the typical sounds of a city or feverishly celebrate in the streets.

-Few months ago, you had a tour in Japan. How was that experience?

Japan tour is always a crazy and amazing experience, with a gig every day, I almost didn't sleep for one week. But you feel a real energy when you play there, it's very wild what I do for Japan, the world music's scene is very small, but I collect a lot of nice feedback from the audience.

-You have played in so many areas..From Japan to Africa and from Australia to the Balkans! Which is the biggest difference, between all these places?

Even in France when you travel from the north to the south it's totally different, so imagine all those countries.. I was very surprised to meet a lot of Greek people in Melbourne, they're there since many generations, it was funny to play traditional tunes from the Balkan there. Each city & countries are ultra different, I always need 2/3 days to feel at home.

-Which are your projects for 2013 (if the world still exists)? J

DJ CLICK MEET HAMADCHA OF FEZ, the next album & live show Click Here – Fès
(sufi music from Morocco meets electronics)
VA FAN FAHRE feat DJ CLICK (tour in France)

CLICK HERE (tour in France + Europe + China..)

-Lot of people (including myself) believe that in France, is easy to follow any kind of art (music, painting, dance etc.) and have immediately persons to support your work. Is that true, for those who want to come in Paris and have a career there?

Is not so true, there are a lot of concurrency, but in the same time a lot of clubs, festivals, places for art, locals, cultural associations etc.. many subventions from the culture government also, if you know how to manage it, and to be patient. It's not so easy, you've to work hard and Paris it's not so a romantic city as they show at travel agency.

-What would you like to say to the Greeks, now that we face this terrible crisis?

Please stay with us, you're the original cultural base of Europe ! I love you !

-Merci beaucoup! Hope to see you soon, performing in Greece!

Dj Spery meets .. dj Panko !

" Dj Panko is a multi-talented musician and highly skilled Dj and producer.
He combines energetic and complex rhythms with his own blend of highly skilled artistry.
As a part of the band Ojos de Brujo won a 2007 Latin Grammy Award for Best Flamenco Album for Techari
and the BBC Radio 3 World Music Award for Europe (2004). Such a great person! "

-Mister Panko! You were born in Barcelona, a city full of sounds and rhythms. That was the main reason that you wanted to start playing music?

MAYBE IS THIS….
I WAS BORN IN LAS RAMBLAS AND I GREW UP THERE CLOSE TO THE LICEUM, I COULD HEAR THE OPERA SINGERS COURTYARD BY..
AND IN THE STREET, A LOT OF NOISE FROM THE PEOPLE THAT WALKED UP AND DOWN SINGING OR PROTESTING IN DEMOSTRATIONS.
I HAD THIS MUSIC INSTINCT SINCE I WAS A KID AND I DEVELOPED BY
PLAYING DIFFERENT INSTRUMENTS LIKE DRUMS, BASS, GUITAR, SINGING UNTIL I FOUND MY PLACE ON THE DECKS AND THE PRODUCTION.

-You are also known as “DJ Panko - El Mago”. Do you believe that flamenco is a magic power, to charm your audience or is it about vibes and emotions?

I WISH I COULD KNOW MORE MAGIC TO CHANGE MANY THINGS IN THIS WORLD…
BUT I WORK WITH FEELINGS AND MUSIC!
FLAMENCO IT SELF HAS A LOT OF MAGIC AND A LOT OF FEELING.

YOU CAN SHOW VERY SAD FEELINGS WITH FLAMENCO AND ALSO VERY HAPPY FEELINGS.
FLAMENCO HAS A LOT OF RICHNESS IN RHYTHM AND HARMONY
BUT I´M ALSO OPEN TO MANY DIFFERENT SOUNDS AND ESPECIALLY
THOSE WHO RESCUE ROOTS’ MUSIC
LIKE BALKAN, AFRICAN ,LATIN,INDIAN OR GREEK MUSIC.
IT´S ALL ABOUT THE FEELINGS AGAIN..

- When did you become a member of Ojos de Brujo and how was that experience?

IN 1997 WE DID OUR FIRST DEMO
DANI MACACO, JUANLU, RAMON G. , MUÑECO AND ME,
THEN AFTER WE DID OUR FIRST ALBUM IN 2000 AND SINCE THEN WAS A NON STOP TOUR ALL OVER THE WORLD…TOURING AND TOURING, ALBUM AFTER ALBUM, LOT OF SUCCES UNTIL 2010, WHEN THE BAND SPLIT.
IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE THAT GAVE ME THE CHANCE TO MEET LOTS OF MUSICIANS FROM DIFFERENT PLACES OF THE WORLD
AND BE ABLE TO TRAVEL TO MANY PLACES IN THIS PLANET.

-Your collaboration with Ojos de Brujo, made you more open minded to mix different sounds or you always wanted to combine flamenco and rumba with music from all over the world?

I THINK IT WAS ALREADY INSIDE ME TO SEARCH FOR MIXING DIFERENT SOUNDS BUT IT WAS MUCH MORE INTO FLAMENCO WITH OJOS DE BRUJO.

-You have a new band now, which is called “Lenacay”. What does it mean and what’s the basic idea of this new project?
“LEN” IS THE WAY AND “ACAY” IS TO WATCH, TO LOOK AT.
THEY ARE TWO WORDS IN GIPSY DIALECT
AND IT COULD MEAN SOMETHING LIKE “TO LEARN BY WATCHING THE WAY”.
THE FIRST IDEA WAS TO MAKE A SOUNDSYSTEM USING FLAMENCO BEATS WITH ELECTRONICS BUT IN THE END, IT BECAME A BAND.

-This time, you use English lyrics too, in some of your songs. Do you think that this will help more and more people to understand your music?

I´M NOT THAT SHURE ABOUT THIS..
AS I SAID IN THE BEGINNING, MUSIC IS ABOUT FEELINGS
AND PEOPLE UNDERSTAND MORE FEELINGS THAN LYRICS SO, IN MY OPINION IS NOT SO IMPORTANT. WE DID THIS BECAUSE OUR SINGER HAD SOME SONGS IN ENGLISH
BUT I DON´T BELIEVE THAT IS A QUESTION OF LANGUAGE.
MUSIC IS A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE.
(BUT YOU SEE, WE ARE DOING THIS INTERVIEW IN ENGLISH! J)

-Which is your favorite song from the debut album of Lenacay
and why?
“IDENTIDAD”
IS A SONG I WROTE FOR RAMON IN A MOMENT THAT HE WAS VERY DOWN AND THINKING HOW DIFFICULT WAS LIFE IN GENERAL…
BUT IS ALSO TALKING ABOUT THE CRISIS WE ARE SUFFERING IN SPAIN AND OTHER PLACES….
THIS SONG SAYS THAT THEY CAN CUT SOCIAL SECURITY,THEY CAN CUT MONEY FOR WORKERS AND EVEN THEY CAN TRY TO CUT OUR PROTEST…THEY CAN MAKE OUR LIFE MUCH MORE DIFFICULT… BUT THEY WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO CUT YOUR IDENTITY!
I DIDN´T WANT TO LOOSE THE CHANCE TO USE MUSIC TO REFUSE THE POLITICAL ABUSSES WE ARE SUFFERING.

-You are a very talented DJ and you have done a lot of productions and remixes. One of my favorite is your latest “Me duele mix”. Balkan – Flamenco style! Could we expect a whole record based on these sounds?

FOR THE MOMENT I WANT TO RELEASE AN ALBUM CALLED “MUNDOLOGIA” WHERE I WILL PUT SOME OF THE BEST REMIXES I DID IN THE LAST 10 YEARS, FROM ALL KINDS OF BANDS AND STYLES OF MUSIC:
FROM FLAMENCO TO BALKAN, FROM CUMBIA TO TRADITIONAL MEDITERRANEAN SOUNDS, FROM BAIAO TO RUMBA
BUT AS YOU SAID THERE IS A VERY GOOD FEEDBACK ON “ME DUELE” SO, MAYBE I WILL START DOING SOMETHING LIKE THIS VERY SOON!

-We are very honored to see you often in Greece, performing not only as a DJ but also with your band! What connects you with my country and when we will hear you live, here, again?

I LOVE YOUR COUNTRY!
I LIKE THE PEOPLE, THE FOOD , THE LIGHT..
I HAVE MANY FRIENDS IN GREECE AND SINCE WE CAME FOR THE FIRST TIME WITH OJOS, IT BECAME ONE OF MY MOST POPULAR PLACES TO DJ!
THAT WAS LIKE 4 OR 5 YEARS AGO..
I HAVE A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH THE PEOPLE FROM PAYRRIA (THE BAND) OR IMAM BAILDI AND I LIKE VERY MUCH YOUR REBETICO MUSIC AND THE MIXES WITH OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC.
I DID TWO REMIXES FOR THEM THAT I LIKE VERY MUCH.
WHEN I´M IN GREECE I FEEL LIKE HOME !
PEOPLE NEEDS MUSIC A LOT IN YOUR COUNTRY
AND ESPECIALLY NOW, SO TO BE ABLE TO RESIST THE HARD SITUATION.
I HOPE I WILL COME IN JANUARY OR FEBRUARY.

-Thank you very much and good luck for you and your band!

THANK YOU SPERY !!!
I HOPE IT WORKS..
ALL MY LOVE
P.
